Sentencing for Man Who Killed Daughter

A Coachella man face sentencing on Friday for fatally beating his 21-month-old daughter, who had more than 30 injuries.

Raul Galvez, 28, has been convicted of second-degree murder. He was also found guilty in July of a felony count of assault on a child causing great bodily injury in the January 6, 2006, death of
his daughter Yazlan.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge David Downing is expected to
sentence Galvez to 25 years to life in prison.

$20,000 Grant to Help East Valley Housing

A $20,000 grant from a Federal Home Loan Bank will support a Coachella-based nonprofit group that plans to use the money as part of an initiative for renovating mobile home parks in the eastern Coachella Valley.

The money will benefit Rancho Housing Alliance, which plans to renovate mobile home parks that are not permitted and lack basic utilities, according to Mary Long of Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco... Read More

This week, doctors from Mecca, La Quinta, and Palm Desert report 'what's going around'.

At the Mecca Clinic Dr. Randolph Gibbs tells us he's seeing fewer cases of dehydration and heat exhaustion. He's also seeing a few cases of residual gastroenteritis now that children are back to school and traveling less. "I have seen several cases of persistent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults," adds Dr. Gibbs. "obesity, alcohol use, smoking and certain foods (onions, excessive fats, citrus fruits and tomatoes) seem to play a role."

Air speed record attempt with swift bio fuel

A local airport is set to host an air speed record attempt this Saturday.

Tradition Aviation at Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal will host Richard "Smokey" Young's attempt to establish a new 100-kilometer closed course speed record using SwiftFuel, an unleaded, high-octane biofuel developed and produced by Swift Enterprises Ltd.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 11 at 8:00 a.m at the airport.  The address is 86400 Lightning St., Thermal, Calif., 92274.

Young's flight will last approximately 30 minutes.

Subway worker held up Tuesday morning

A gunman robbed a Coachella eatery Tuesday, a sheriff's  deputy said.

The robbery at Subway, 49965 Harrison St., was reported at 9:28 a.m.,  sheriff's Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela said.

The bandit entered the business, took out a handgun and fled with an  undisclosed sum of cash, Valenzuela said.

Coachella resident gets 26 years for Balboa Park killing

Eddie Lopez Montanez, 48, of Coachella, was found guilty July 23, 2010 in the 1986 death of Delores “Dodie” Attig, who was 36. On Friday, September 3, 2010 he was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.

A small vegetation fire broke out Friday afternoon in Coachella. The fire broke out about shortly after 3 p.m. near Dillon Road between Highway 111 and 86 Expressway.
